Nampak Plastics are the largest supplier of HDPE (plastic) milk bottles to the UK dairy market, with sales of over 2 billion bottles per year (more than 60% market share), and has a strong commitment to the environment and an ongoing policy of carbon footprint reduction.

Recent 'green' initiatives have included light-weighting of bottles (Nampak now produce the lightest bottles in the industry), and the inclusion of recycled material (currently at a level of 10%).

Somar has been brilliant to work with. The solution was not disruptive to normal operational activity and the team has not only empowered me to deliver great carbon savings – my number one objective – but also to add significantly to the company's bottom line and reduce maintenance, whilst improving the working environment throughout the facilities.

Needless to say, all of the Senior Management are delighted with the results and have now endorsed a roll-out of the solution to the rest of our sites.

The natural extension from these activities is to focus on energy consumption and in particular energy efficient solutions, and Nampak have targeted a 10% reduction in carbon footprint (over a 12 month period).

How Somar helped

Nampak have now partnered with Somar to drive down the energy usage associated to warehouse, production and office areas.

Somar's energy-efficient Eluma lighting not only helps reduce the amount of energy consumed, but provides a much more pleasant working environment throughout the facility, leading to a safer workplace and improved quality (as seen in the unedited before and after photos above).

The first facility to benefit from the new lighting approach was Nampak's Oakthorpe site, at which a 71% reduction in energy consumption was achieved on the lighting circuits. This represents a 3.4% reduction in the whole of the site's carbon footprint.... a significant step towards achieving the targeted 10%!

Somar and Nampak are now rolling the initiative out across the rest of Nampak's 8 sites.
