Somar was founded in 1991 by Ian Wrigley and Peter Campbell. Ian had previously founded and run a highly successful company distributing Automated Boiler Management systems, and it was his experience in this industry that allowed him to identify a major change in attitude towards energy management. Due to evolving concerns over global warming, industry and commerce were awakening to the fact that they needed to project a responsible attitude towards pollution and protection of the environment. Governments were also coming under increasing pressure to deliver on matters related to environmental protection and, as a result, many governments had set about encouraging industry to manage their energy consumption in a professional manner.

Education as to the financial benefits of sound energy management, and methods of achieving these savings coupled with financial incentives has led to many responding to this scenario - as senior management began to realise the benefits of reducing energy, professional energy management had come of age.
